Falken Wildpeak AT3W

Why I chose the Falken Wildpeak AT3W for a high-mileage daily-driver and overland build, and how they have performed after 10,000 km of Alberta highway, forest service road and crown land.

Why the Wildpeak?

A black RAM 1500 on a gravel campground road showing its all-terrain tyres

The shortlist: BFGoodrich KO2 ($420+/tyre), Toyo Open Country AT3, Falken Wildpeak AT3W. The Wildpeaks won on value – $80 less per tyre than the KO2, plus the three-peak mountain snowflake rating.

The OEM tyres were done at 280,000 km. I needed something that handles forest service roads and crown land access roads while staying comfortable on the highway daily commute, and I did not want to pay KO2 money for it.

On-road

Highway manners are the surprise. At 110 km/h they are maybe 10% louder than OEM – completely liveable for a daily commute.

They are slightly heavier than what came off, so there is a minor fuel economy hit. Noticeable on paper, not really noticeable in the wallet.

Off-road

Gravel forest service roads, wet clay, loose rock – no drama. The only situation I would want more tyre is deep mud, and for that you would need a dedicated mud terrain anyway.

Ten thousand kilometres in and they have handled everything from the Icefields Parkway to unmaintained crown land south of Nordegg. Would buy again.
